The Right Talent At The Right Place

9:55 PM

Hi everyone, for those of you who do not know me personally, I am a fresh graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications, and I’m in dilemma of not knowing what kind of job field to get into.

Last year April I officially finished all of my subjects leaving only my thesis. I purposely took the rest of the year off to do my thesis, bum around, improve my blog, and hopefully figure out what I want to do.

I know that our first job is often not our permanent job and that the first job is the time when we test the waters, learn and experience new things in the working environment.

My issue now is not only what particular job to get into, but which field? Should I start with something related to my field? Or should I just start doing anything that comes along the way?

If you are on the same boat as I am, High 5! But erm it’s not a good thing, hahahaha…

Anyways I got to know about a career tour organized by Career Tour (M) Sdn Bhd and it will be held at 6 universities: KBU, Segi University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Taylor’s Lakeside Campus, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and UCSI University; from April to June 2013.

Here are the list of things that you should prepare yourself before attending the career fair. There are Useful Tips on CarrerTour’s website for students to prepare themselves before attending Career Tour. I’ve provided a list of links that you may refer to:

a) How to choose a career? http://www.careertour.com.my/useful-tips/right-job/
Funny thing is that a lot of people been telling me that if I don’t try a few jobs I won’t know what I like. I used to agree with that mentality as well until I heard about CareerTour and their tips on the website on how to choose a career.
Jumping from job to job is a waste of time, especially if your goal is to discover your interest. Hey we aren’t getting any younger. It is important to find a job that satisfies you; after all you’ll be working for the next half of your life.

Please click on the link above and read more, it is very informative.

b) Research on companies.
Always research the companies’ background before going for interview. NEVER ask the company “What do you guys do?”, that is like a slap in the face.

c) How to write quality resumes?
When it comes to writing a quality resume, one thing that we should always keep in mind is that it should be direct and straight to the point. Use bold print and bullet points to attract recruiters’ attention. This way it would be easier for the recruiters to read our resume.
Make sure the resume looks simple and yet be sure the message is delivered. Recruiters have a lot of resumes to read, hence writing an essay, or beating around the bush might just tempt them to skip your resume. Read more here…http://www.careertour.com.my/quality-resume/

d) How to write cover letter?
When it comes to cover letters, there is not a one-size-fits-all document. For cover letters it is understood to write differently as different companies have different expectations. So be sure to do an in-depth research on the company to know what they are looking for.

Keep in mind that a cover letter is not a resume; cover letters will usually be viewed first before your resume, so the best time to catch the recruiters’ attention is by the cover letter. Read more… http://www.careertour.com.my/useful-tips/cover-letter/

e) Dress to impress.
Here’s a list of Do’s and Don’ts when it comes to dressing up for job fairs and Interviews. http://www.careertour.com.my/useful-tips/dress-up-professionally/

f) Interaction with potential employers.

g) Prepare a list of questions often asked in interviews:
Questions that are usually asked during an interview are such as:
  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses
  • Why did you apply this position?
  • Why should I hire you?
  • Do you have any questions to ask us?
You may read more in detailed at http://www.careertour.com.my/useful-tips/interviews/

h) Follow ups with recruiters.
Follow up with recruiters to show that you’re determined for the job and that you’re keen for the position.
